DESCRIPTION:Beethoven\, Montgomery\, Puccini\, Dvorak\nThe Age of Reason shares the stage with the Romantic Era: A quintet by Beethoven\, a sextet by Dvorak\, and two short string quartet gems: Puccini’s “Crisantemi” and “Strum” by the young\, brilliant African American composer\, Jessie Montgomery. \nFor our Valentine concert this year\, the Age of Reason shares the stage with the Romantic Era in a program that includes Beethoven’s sunny String Quintet Op. 29 in a new flute arrangement\, Dvorak’s expansive String Sextet in A major\, and two short string quartet gems: Puccini’s delicate “Crisantemi\,” and the ground-breaking “Strum” by the brilliant young African American composer\, Jessie Montgomery.\n \nThe Beethoven Quintet\, Op. 29\, is his only full-scale\, original composition in the string quintet genre; it is a richly melodic and elegant work\, and its blustery finale\, and occasional flashes of lightening have given the work its nickname\, “Storm Quintet.” It is a pleasure to have made it a newish work by transcribing the first violin part for flute. You know me by now! The contrast of the flute timbre and resonance against the four strings enhances its innate beauty.\n \nJessie Montgomery\, Musical America’s 2023 Composer of the Year\, is a GRAMMY-winning\, acclaimed composer\, violinist\, and educator whose music interweaves classical music with elements of vernacular music\, improvisation\, poetry\, and social consciousness\, making her an acute interpreter of twenty-first century American sound and experience.\n \nThe Dvorak String Sextet was composed in the middle of the composer’s Slavic period\, in which the composer introduced folk elements into his music. When conductor Václav Talich heard Dvořák’s sextet in 1941\, he declared: “Oh my word! This is so beautiful! Beautiful musical ideas\, a beautiful structure and a beautiful sound! God himself must have been walking the Czech Lands when his humble servant Dvořák bequeathed to us a work of such excellence and sanctity.”\n \nAppropriate for Valentine’s Day\, among the featured performers will be two married couples—Mistral member violinist Sarita Kwok and her husband\, BSO cellist Alexandre Lecarme\, and returning guest artists hailing from the Chicago Symphony: violist Lawrence Neumann and violinist Qing Hou; Mistral members violist Stephanie Fong\, flutist Julie Scolnik\, and frequent guest cellist Raman Ramakrishnan complete the roster.

DESCRIPTION:Called “the Yo-Yo Ma of the harp world\,” riveting harpist Bridget Kibbey makes her Mistral debut with artistic director and flutist Julie Scolnik in a diverse program that ranges from harp solos from her new CD by jazz legend Paquito D’Rivera who morphs the instrument into a bandoneon to evoke Argentinian tango\, to Boston composer Kati Ágocs\, a modern-day Benjamin Britten\, who treats her own native Canadian folk music as found objects for a new work for solo harp\, to David Bruce’s enchanting music-box-like Caja de Musica. Some may believe that poetry is  love’s greatest vehicle for this high holy day in our calendars\, but I would argue that music\, which transcends language\, is love’s medium par excellence.  \nYes\, Shakespeare\, playing on: making music resiliently\, indelibly\, eternally\, even as an act of resistance to death\, is what today’s program affirms. We celebrate the enduring voices of composers who faced horrendous challenges during a dark period in time\, but who continued to write beautiful music. Several of today’s composers were forced to flee their homelands and leave their legacies behind. Shostakovich struggled to reconcile his artistic integrity with the demands of the Soviet regime. Mendelssohn’s music was belittled by the anti-Semites of his day and was eventually banned by the Nazis. \nFor all these composers and the music they wrote\, the phrase “undying love”comes to mind. Kindness and humanity are eternal; they are conserved; they do not die or succumb to the reigns of tyrants.  \nOn this concert we present a pastiche of beautiful works by composers whose voices were silenced at the hands of totalitarianism. Many composers were forced to flee their homelands and leave their legacies behind in order to escape prosecution and discrimination under the Nazi regime. Others were stripped of their art when their music was banned and removed from the repertoire of German orchestras by the Third Reich and Nazi-occupied Europe. \nThis special concert\, for strings\, piano\, voice\, and flute\, celebrates those many voices\, with pieces informing each other and resonating artistically. There is no need to put this music in a memorializing context in order to appreciate it\, but the works may engender deep thought in sound\, aesthetics\, and history.
